I know we’ve all heard of “Chat GPT”, a popular AI tool many middle and high schoolers use. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly changing the educational landscape, sparking debate about its role and impact on students, teachers, and the overall learning process. Some people believe that AI is going to steal all of our jobs, and ruin our education system, while others believe it may take the place of teachers.
Personalized Learning The use of AI allows children to learn while still being interested in the videos. Text-to-video AIs, study guide creators, and many more allow us to learn while still using AI for a good cause. AI tools can adapt to individual learning needs, enabling students to learn at their own pace. Platforms like Khan Academy and Duolingo use AI to identify a student’s weak points and offer tailored exercises, making education more accessible and effective. I know personally that I’ve used study guides for my Biology midterms.
Expanded Access to Resources AI provides students with 24/7 access to learning materials and support. You aren’t just limited to learning at school if you don’t get a concept because it can help you learn difficult concepts. The resources on the internet can be helpful, but AI as a resource can also be an inspiration for many ideas.
Cheating While we’ve talked about the positive aspects of having AI, one huge aspect we haven’t yet touched on is cheating. We are all well aware academic honesty is a huge part of school. However, even AI detectors often can’t catch the sneaky ways students often go through to not get caught cheating, even running it through AI detectors multiple times to make sure it is not detectable by software. This is a huge negative side of AI in our education system.
Lack of Creativity In today’s world, a vast majority of us rely on the internet for new ideas/inspiration, so it would make sense we would turn to AI as well. However, what we often forget is that AI is ARTIFICIAL intelligence, and the real intelligence is from ourselves. Being creative, and having the ability to come up with unique ideas are singular to humans. AI can only mimic or imitate previous ideas online, while we can innovate and think outside of the box.
While these are only a few examples of pros and cons, there are SO many more to highlight that can change the way we perceive AI in general. AI in education is a controversial opinion, but I hope this article gave you something to take away with!
