Let's give a round of applause to two very talented GVHS senior students: Hanalea Grimmelbein and Maya Hudson. The Rising Stars award given by the National Art Education Association (NAEA) recognizes such students who showed promise and leadership throughout their art studies. Both Hanalea and Maya wish to pursue Art Education in college and this achievement demonstrates their dedication and hard work towards this path. They'll be recognized at the NAEA Convention in March, an annual event that serves as a professional gathering for art educator, arts, and other leaders in the field. Read more about these passionate students below and the work they've done!

Hanalea Grimmelbein

Hanalea is senior currently taking AP Studio Art Class with Mrs. Buchanan and Pottery I with Mr. Hartman. Read below to learn more what this award means to her and her future aspirations in the field:

I’ve always wanted to pursue art, as it was always more than a hobby to me. This year I’ve really focused on what college and career I want. Because of my love for the arts, I’ve applied to art schools and I plan to major in illustration and art education so I can further develop my skills. The rising star award is meant to bring recognition to rising art educators, and I’m honored to have earned this.

Maya Hudson

Maya is a senior currently taking AP Studio Art Class with Mrs. Buchanan and Advanced Pottery with Mr. Hartman. Read what this award means to Maya and her desire to become an art teacher:

I am truly grateful that I got this award, It means a lot to me, and I hope it can play a part in supporting my future career in art. My main goal for my future is to attend college to further my studies in art, and eventually I hope to become an art teacher, sharing my passion with others. This award encourages me to work even harder and keep pushing forward to the future.

Interviewing Mr. Hartman and Mrs. Buchanan was a wonderful opportunity to learn about Hanalea and Maya and their achievements. Having had both students in various other classes besides AP Studio Art, Mrs. Buchanan is proud to teach such talented students. Mrs. Buchanan describes them as extremely hard working individuals. While their artistic styles differ--Maya's work being very precise and Hanalea's being very expressive--both are extremely committed to their artistic visions. They spend a lot of time practicing to improve their skills and create works that push their boundaries. Mrs. Buchanan sees them becoming amazing teachers in the future given their passion for art and the energy they will undoubtedly bring to their future classrooms. She encourages both of them to have confidence in their abilities and to keep striving. As Mrs. Buchanan, Mr. Hartman praises their dedication and investment in learning. Mr. Hartman's word of advice is to have patience: every artist grows at different speeds. Thank you to Mr. Hartman and Mrs. Buchanan for not only taking the time to share their thoughts, but also giving their continued support to all our GVHS art students.

Congratulations to Hanalea and Maya on this remarkable accomplishment! While this may be the end of their chapter in high school, I am certain they will continue to do magnificent things in their future. To all art students, and even those who may not consider themselves artists, let this be a reminder to always aim high. This achievement highlights how talent comes with dedication. As we step into 2025, have a positive mindset and persevere!
