Looking for a new adventure? Fan of the famous Sherlock Holmes? Perhaps Ocean’s Eleven? Then this Netflix show is right up your alley! If you seem hesitant, don’t leave yet. This show has been enjoyed by many as I saw first hand how hooked those who “don’t watch TV” can be. This Netflix series took inspiration from writer Maurice Leblanc’s fictional gentleman thief and master of disguise, Arsène Lupin.

The character became quite popular in France in the 20th century when he made his debut in “Arsène Lupin, Gentleman Burglar” (1907), a collection of short stories. Through intelligence, wit, and resourcefulness, Lupin outwits the police and performs daring heists. Assuming various identities he ultimately seeks to defeat villains and corrupt figures, thus gaining popularity among the poor. Leblanc’s legacy largely revolved around Lupin, a French twist to the Sherlock Holmes we know and love. Lupin has been adapted into numerous films, television series, and other media providing great entertainment to the world.

“Lupin” is set in present-day France with leading actor Omar Sy and other key supporting players speaking French. If you don’t want to improve your French speaking skills, no worries, their voices are dubbed by English-speaking actors including Austin Warren. Still worried whether it will work well, don’t take my word for it, check out yourself! This modern and reimagined take on the classic series journeys through the life of Assane Diop, sharing his personal experiences and his motivations for criminal activity. While the character may sound villainous, you’ll be quick to learn that he is quite easy to love. The episodes will leave you on cliffhangers (that is unless you continue to watch) and the revealed plots and schemes will leave you dumbfounded. After watching Season 2 a while back, I got to enjoy Season 3 which was recently released. Assane’s story continues to keep me at the edge of my seat and I’m sure the storyline could go anywhere.

My personal opinion is that Lupin is a must-see and I would definitely recommend watching it with family and/or friends. Also, if you are not the type to watch TV, I’m sure the classic books never fail to impress! I plan to read the original books soon so feel free to email (marissamiczek@garnetvalley.org) if you want to get an insight on the book. Enjoy the show!
