Some of us might not enjoy the spooky season of Halloween, so here are some other Holidays and breaks to look forward to. Although you might see some of these holidays as a day to lay in your bed and sleep, there are also many ways to celebrate!

  1. Yom Kippur

Yom Kippur, meaning the day of atonement, is celebrated from the evening of Friday, October 11- Saturday, October 12 is a Jewish holiday. As the most holy day on the Jewish calendar, it is a day to pray, fast, and repent. Ways I’ve seen this holiday done is quitting something such as chocolate or something addicting for the duration of the holiday, Fasting from sunset to sunset, and attending religious services. Other things people do are Kapparot (doing a good deed for another person), or wearing white cloth to represent purity. Even if you do not celebrate, it is a good way to quit something that might not be good for you for the duration of the holiday.

  1. Indigenous People’s Day (Also known as Columbus Day)

Indigenous People’s Day celebrates and honors the Indigenous peoples. It is celebrated on Monday, October 14th. Some things you can do to celebrate are visiting local events, donating to Indigenous Peoples, and protesting against environmental injustice. But for Columbus Day, it celebrates him as he found the New World.

  1. Thanksgiving

Celebrated on November 28th, 2024, Thanksgiving is a holiday that celebrates giving and family. Things you can do on this day include eating dinner with your family, going to a local events, and attending parades. It is a good day to show appreciation to your family and friends, as some might adults might not even see their families the entire year.

  1. Day of the Dead

The Day of the Dead is a Mexican holiday that is celebrated from November 1rst through November 2nd. This is a day to celebrate your deceased loved ones. Many people build altars with offerings of food, wearing sugar skulls, and set our memorabilia of their loved ones. Though you might not do all this, it is a good time to go and visit you’re loved ones and honor them.

  1. Veterans Day

Celebrated on Nov. 11, Veterans Day is a holiday that celebrates the people who have gone through and fought in war. It represents love for the country, and honor for the people who protect it. During this day, people will give a moment of silence, display the nation’s colors, and donate to veterans. Many war veterans today struggle with finding jobs and homes, which is why we need to help them.
