Happy October Garnet Valley! As we get into this chilly month it’s important to remember that October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, and is often referred to as “Pinktober.” The month is dedicated to educating people all over about breast cancer, including early signs and symptoms.
Breast cancer is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer in the world, and women in targeted areas are encouraged to test using high-quality screening programs. Some risk factors for breast cancer are:
Family history
Genetic mutations
Radiation exposure
Hormone therapy
Lifestyle choices
Age
t’s crucial to be aware of these risk factors to reduce your chances of getting breast cancer in your life.
In 2024, more than 360,000 people will be diagnosed with breast cancer. However, advancements in early detection methods and support continue to increase the chances of survival. When caught in its earliest, benign stages, the 5-year estimated survival rate of breast cancer is 99%. In October, the National Breast Cancer Foundation (https://www.nationalbreastcancer.org/breast-cancer-awareness-month/) sends out free educational resources to support health among people susceptible to getting breast cancer, and how others can make a difference. Visit the website and keep a look out for this information this October!
This past Friday, Garnet Valley High School’s very own Unite For Her, an organization that assists women going through breast cancer treatments by raising money, held a booth at the football game. The students and community members attending wore their pink shirts to support this event. While the Jags were winning, Unite For Her sold T-shirts all night. Unite For Her is also holding stands at other sports events for fall sports and will continue to do so for the winter and spring sports.
Have a great October everyone!
